More Horses A**es Than Horses

“Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people.”
W. C. Fields
The New York City Council is considering a ban of horse-drawn carriages in the city. Animal rights groups, including PeTA, the Humane Society of the U.S., the ASPCA, and other spinoffs are in a froth, clamoring for donations [...]

There Is No Truth to the Rumor . . .

Today, we inaugurate a new Friday feature. There Is No Truth to the Rumor will debunk gossip, bust urban legends, and, we hope, provide a smile at the end of your week.
There Is No Truth To the Rumor that President Obama sent Chief Justice John Roberts a gift for his 53rd birthday on January [...]

Woman-Haters for Bob McDonnell

VBDems reports that Republican candidate for governor Bob McDonnell received a large contribution from Eagle Forum PAC, founded by professional female misogynist Phyllis Schlafly.  Speculation abounds over whether we will see “the more tolerant side of Bob McDonnell,” since Schlafly’s son, who now runs the PAC,  is gay.
Not likely.  Phyllis Schlafly is the ’70’s [...]

Thank You, Earle Mobley

We do not want to take sides in the Ryan Frederick murder trial.  We are deeply grieved that Chesapeake Police Detective Jerrod Shivers died in the line of duty.
That being said, Portsmouth Commonwealth’s Attorney Earle Mobley deserves our commendation for valuing truth and justice.  He stepped forward to inform Frederick’s defense counsel that a jailhouse [...]

The Well-Tanned Face of Obstruction

Republican Minority Leader John Boehner talks about what’s wrong with the President’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan. Below, we offer our translation.

Boehner condemns the bill for not having enough tax cuts and containing too much government spending.  Here’s what he really means:
==I like it when the president listens to our ideas. [...]

More Jobs Lost

Yesterday brought more news of thousands and thousands of massive job cuts, from a Who’s Who of the American economy.

2.6 million jobs lost in 2008.  600,000 jobs lost in December. 584,000 in November.  432,000 in October.  200,000 just this year.
President Obama called for bipartisan approval [...]

Medicaid Cuts Hit Hospitals

So what’s the big deal about cutting Medicaid?  A front-page story in The Virginian-Pilot reports that proposed Medicaid cuts mean layoffs and cutbacks in services for local hospitals.
It’s just part of the double whammy created by the recession.  As the state sees more job layoffs and corporate downsizing, more people lose health insurance and need Medicaid. [...]

Vets Have Ally in Nye

WVEC reports that veterans are pleased with Second District Congressman Glenn Nye’s assignment to key committee posts on both the House Armed Services Committee and the Veterans Affairs Committee. Nye noted that

It’s important for me to be able to take care of the needs of our military families, both those who are active duty [...]

Taking Back God and the Flag

One of the unspoken achievements of Barack Obama’s moving inauguration ceremony was its compelling appeal to the shared beliefs and patriotism of all Americans.
From Pastor Rick Warren’s invocation, to Dr. Joseph Lowery’s sometimes amusing benediction, the participants called for divine guidance, inspiration, and wisdom, for justice, tolerance, and compassion.  They underscored the important point Barack [...]

Oath, the Irony

On Tuesday, Chief Justice John Roberts committed the flub heard ’round the world, messing up the words to the presidential oath of office, which are spelled out in Article II, section 8 of the U.S. Constitution.
On Wednesday, Roberts got a do-over, and managed, despite his education, experience, and high self-esteem, to read the thirty-seven word [...]
