Welcome to the Great Blue Heron! Today we begin our series “Around the Churl in 80 Days!” We will explore all sides of John Sidney McCain III. From now through election day, we will feature the 80+ reasons why John McCain cannot be our next President.
Today’s installment: McCain’s Moral Failure.
Last night Rick Warren asked John Sidney McCain III what was his greatest moral failure. McCain responded that he is an imperfect person, but his greatest moral failing was the failure of his first marriage. Sadly, Rick Warren did not follow up. So far, we haven’t seen much follow up in the press, either. Given the feeding frenzy surrounding John Edwards’ extramarital affair, one wonders why there is not a stampede of National Enquirer “reporters” or O’Reilly Factor producers mining the juicy details. Could it be they can’t figure out which of his ten residences to stake out?
Calling his first marriage a failure almost sounds like the breakup was the result of unavoidable natural causes, like a flood or an earthquake. But this wouldn’t make it a moral failure, would it? The reason John Sidney McCain III considers it a moral failure is that he cannot take responsibility for the fate of his marriage and hold to his ethical fantasies of himself as above all things, a principled loyal man of integrity. McCain did not want to give details because that would force him to confess that he is every bit the lout that John Edwards is deservedly accused of being. If John Edwards’ political career is over, how has McCain’s survived this long?
It must be because the ex-Mrs. McCain has not made a fuss. Why not? Also, the Republican Family Values Pander Machine has not made a fuss. Why not?
Could it be that a philanderer is not a philanderer if he marries his mistress? John Sidney McCain III’s marriage didn’t fail– it was blown up–by John and a wealthy trophy mistress named Cindy.
In another answer later in the forum, Rick Warren asked McCain to define marriage. McCain predictably towed the line and said marriage is the union of one man and one woman. He didn’t say how long marriage should last, or whether vows are important, or exactly what “in sickness and in health” means to him. Oops!
Clearly, John Sidney McCain III has already carried one state: the state of denial.
